Coronary Artery Disease

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 18.2% of Hispanics in the United States have coronary artery disease.

Coronary artery disease is a condition in which the arteries that supply blood to the heart narrow or become blocked due to the buildup of plaques. Here are some key things you should know about this disease:

  • Causes: The primary cause is atherosclerosis, a process in which deposits of fat, cholesterol, and other substances accumulate in the arterial walls. Other contributing factors may include hypertension, smoking, diabetes, and an unhealthy diet.
  • Symptoms: Common symptoms include chest pain or discomfort (angina), shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, and in severe cases, a heart attack.
  • Diagnosis: Diagnosis is typically made through stress tests, electrocardiograms, echocardiograms, coronary angiography, among others.
  • Treatment: Treatment may include medications, lifestyle changes, and in more severe cases, surgical procedures such as angioplasty or coronary bypass.

It is important to be aware of coronary artery disease and its risks, especially if you have risk factors. If you experience any symptoms, it is important to consult a doctor.

Being informed and leading a healthy lifestyle is very important for maintaining a strong and healthy heart. Stay informed, stay healthy.
